Alfredo Pereira's Music Pages

Welcome and thanks for visiting! Besides using this site to make available some of my compositions, I plan to post some impressions from concerts I've attended, and perhaps some harmony stuff.. I've recently been experimenting a lot with floating voicings on the guitar; these really convey the kind of timbral landscape I have in mind right now, besides being a healthy change from just sitting at the computer composing !.. yet, for now it's just the music..

About Me..

I'm 44 and I live in the Lisbon area. I've been making my living by teaching physics/maths as well as working in labs; however, music and astronomy are my main interests. So far, success has only come in astronomy, with the discovery of 4 "novae" stars. Other stuff that interests me, includes chess, meteorology, history, animals..

Musical influences ? mostly Andy Summers.. and a bit from Stewart Copeland..

Music I listen to:

Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter, Paula Sousa, Pedro Madaleno, Dizzy Gillespie, Eric Dolphy, Benny Golson, Grant Green, Oscar Peterson, Wynton Kelly, Pee Wee Russell, François Houle, Fletcher Henderson, Tom Jobim, Elis Regina, Rosa Passos, Eliane Elias, Joe Pass, Jim Greeninger, Wes Montgomery, Birelli Lagrene, Ray Charles, Tony Joe White..

The Police, PJ Harvey, Suede, The Smiths, Micro Audio Waves, Bat for Lashes, The Auteurs, Peter Murphy, Magazine, Radio Macau, The Creatures, Siouxie and the Banshees, The Passions, Bauhaus, Julian Cope, Teardrop Explodes, A Flock of Seagulls, Joy Division, David Bowie, XTC, Bob Marley, The Skids, Peter Gabriel, Solid Senders, Alan Vega, Sisters of Mercy, Talking Heads, The Quarks, Suzanne Vega, Andy White, Sade Adu, Frank Black, The Black Crowes, Wedding Present, Wah, DAF, Arthur Russell, The Ramones, The Doors, New Order, Voyage, Theatre of Hate, The Gun Club, Go-Go's, The B52's, The Clash, Soft Cell, The Sound, Sidi Bou Said, Levellers, Comateens, Blondie, Suzi Quatro [ come on.. TV ?.. judging by the sample I get when I visit my parents, I don't think I'm losing much by not having any of that.. thanks :-P .. I do however enjoy listening to a couple of radio stations in the Lisbon area (antena 2, oxigenio, radar, marginal, europa..)

I seldom read more than a book or two each year, nevertheless authors which impressed me include Nuno Bragança, Alvaro de Campos, Baudelaire, Kafka, Evelyn Waugh, Eça de Queiroz, Nabokov.. also comics by Hugo Pratt, Enki Bilal..

Music Links I find useful:

Andy Summers ( check out "A Thousand Stones" ! )

Hot Club de Portugal

Paula Sousa (myspace)

João Moreira (blog) / João Moreira (myspace)

"A Jazz Improvisation Primer" by Marc Sabatella (an outstanding educator, Marc really conveys what is paramount; read the part about the solo's contour for instance)
